TAM3054便は、TAM航空により運行されていました。その便は、ブラジル南部のポルトアレグレからサンパウロを結ぶ国内線で、同機はエアバス社製の旅客機で、機体記号PR-MBK・型式A320-233でした。ジュセリーノ・ルースは、事故を未然に防ぐために数通の手紙を送りました。やり取りの中で、ブラジル航空の秘書は郵送したその手紙が実際にジュセリーノ・ルースによって書かれたかを確かめるために彼に電話をくれました。2007年7月17日、機体はサンパウロのコンゴニャス国際空港の滑走路35Lへ着陸しました。しかし、その直後に滑走路を左にそれてオーバーランし、ワシントン・ルイス大通り（以下、「WL通り」）の反対側へ飛び出しました。その上、道路を横切った挙句、滑走路17R近くのTAMエクスプレス・ビル（貨物取扱所：以下、「TMAビル」）に衝突しました。この事故で乗員乗客187名全員と地上にいた12名が亡くなりました。このTAM3054便オーバーラン事故は、2009年5月31日にアントニオ・カルロス・ジョビン国際空港発シャルル・ド・ゴール国際空港行きのエールフランス447便が航行中に大西洋上に墜落後22ケ月間で、ブラジルだけでなく南アメリカ諸国で最悪の航空事故となりました。その上、エアバスA320型機による事故としては最も多くの犠牲者を出しました。エアバスA320型TAM航空3054便は、ポルトアレグレのサルガド・フィリオ国際空港を午後5時16分に離陸し、サンパウロのコンゴニャス国際空港に向け出発。既に日が暮れた午後6時51分、3054便は滑走路35Lへ着陸。高速であったので、着陸後に左右のエンジンの逆噴射装置による減速ができずに、機体は滑走路の残り三分の一の芝生が敷かれたあたりを左へそれ、滑走路から飛び出しました。そして、空港に隣接しているWL大通り上空を横切った後に、ガソリンスタンドの一部にぶつかり、WL大通り反対側にあるTAMビルに激突。WL大通り上空を横切った時に、数台の車の屋根にもぶつかりました。着陸時に「満タン」の燃料を搭載していたこと、そして4階建てのTAMビルに突っ込んだ衝撃が主な原因で、事故現場は炎上。火災発生がTAMビルの構造を弱め、その後ビルは崩壊。墜落時、同機がポルトアレグレからブラジルのサンパウロまで行くのに必要以上の燃料を搭載していたことが、爆発と地上のTAMビルの炎上を招きました。過剰な灯油が燃料タンクにあるのは、航空法に反していませんが、ブラジルの主要航空各社では比較的よくあることで、さらなる不必要な危険を招くだけです。有名な犯罪科学捜査専門家の一人でブラジルから来たレジナルド・ティロティーは、ジュセリーノ・ルースからTMA航空に送られた手紙を分析し、手紙に記された内容の信憑性を支持し、ここに添付されている専門的な報告書を発行しました。事故後、TMA航空はポルトアレグレとサンパウロを結ぶ国内線の便名を変えました。JJ 3054便の表示をやめ、JJ 3046便としました。乗員乗客187人全員がTMAビルへの衝突で亡くなりました。11名のTMAビルで働いていた人々と隣のガソリンスタンドにいたタクシー運転手もその衝突で死亡し、この事故の犠牲者は199人となりまし た。
